It is that time of the year again! You’re tempted to go to the beach or lay in the sun to get some color but you’re scared. You’re scared because you’ve read all the articles and the research telling you to stay away from the sun. We’re here to remind you that your fear is valid. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Association, excessive exposure to sun and UV rays can cause undesired effects like sunburn, sunspots, photodamage, premature skin aging, skin cancer and so on. The list is endless.

But should this stop you from a fun day at the beach or that tropical vacation you’ve been planning with bae? Not at all! While any amount of tanning is considered harmful, taking preventative measures can reduce the potential sun, UVA and UVB  rays damage by tenfold if not more.

→ Can my skin Tan with sunscreen?

The answer to this is extremely subjective. The amount your skin tans depends on genetics, skin tone, skin health, sunscreen usage and so much more. Tanning is essentially your skin’s method of fighting the inflammation caused by sun damage. So your skin in the process of tanning, might produce more melanin than mine in a given time frame and vice versa. While we can’t tell you if your skin will tan as much as you'd like it to, you will definitely be prone to damage from UV rays, photoaging and skin cancer without preventative measures. The most reliable measure is to use an appropriate sunscreen. Other measures include stepping out on days with a low UV index, wearing a hat, wearing sunglasses and resting in the shade.

→ What kind of sunscreen should I use when I go tanning?

Dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen on all exposed body parts for protection. It is important to note that no sunscreen is capable of providing full protection. However, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF will provide you more protection. An SPF 30 will give you protection from 97% of sun and UV rays, and SPF 50 a whopping 98%. The difference between SPF 50 and 100 isn’t much, only 1%.

Once again, no sunscreen can give you 100% protection.
